Default Cv axle won't go in

I'm replacing the drivers side front axle on my 2010 fusion manual transmission. I can get it to go in because of the damn snap ring. Two questions. Any tips on getting the axle on easier? And is the snap ring really needed? I feel the axle won't fall out if not installed but is needed to keep the seal so gear oil doesn't leak out.

If you put some grease around the snap ring it may go in easier because it is necessary.
Look carefully at the ring itself, it may have been spread more than necessary to get it on the joint piece and if that is the case you might carefully remove it and squeeze it a little so it fits tighter on the joint piece .Make sure the splines are lined up properly and it should go right in.
