Default Clutch and Check Engine Light Problems

I have a 96 Ranger, 3.0 liter, 5 speed manual, air. Only 120K on it .

Clutch went at 80 K. On two occasions since I told the dealer the stick was hard to put into1st gear. He said need new clutch. So installed 2 new clutches about 10 k apart. Now same problem, hard to go into 1st gear. I am sure he will tell me new clutch.

What is wrong, 3 clutches in 40 k miles. Junk parts, incompetent mechanic, both? Don't tell me I don't know how to use a clutch. I have 500K on other manual transmission vehicles with no clutches needed.

Check engine light comes on for a couple of weeks and then went off. Had it fixed the first time, enough to pass emissions testing. After repair, had rough idle, loss of power. Felt like it was about to quit when I was running at speed. Dealer had difficulty finding problem first time. Computer showed no problems. Now light is back on after only a few miles on the new repair. Any ideas?

Thanks.

Is that the only shifting problem you are having, into 1st from a stop ? Does the trans grind when trying to get into 1st or is the shift lever itself difficult to get in 1st?
Did the clutch replacements temporarily correct the problem?

Could you tell us what the code(s) were at the time the lite was on and you had it checked?

What was the new repair?
