Default 98 Taurus, I don't know what to do anymore! idle issue.

Ok, I've searched the internet, and I've looked everywhere I could, had mechanics look at my car, and no one can figure out what is wrong with my car. So I am coming to the forums for an answer.

My car drives good, there is no issue in that, but when I get to a stop light or park my RPMs drop anywhere from 200-800RPMs. There is a puttering noise, and it sometimes dies.

I've had an Idle Air Control Valve replaced, a Mass Airflow Sensor, and the Waterpump replaced in the last 3 days. This did not cure the problem. Autozone hooks it up to their computers and I still get the "Engine Too Lean" codes (p0171 and p0174).

The last thing I did was unplug the battery for 10 minutes, and that seemed to clear my engine light, but the car still idles badly. My mechanic, my 2 uncles who work on cars, and the people at autozone do not know what the issue is. Any ideas would be helpful. Thank you for your time.

Try unplugging the Mass Air Flow sensor and see if it still does the same thing.

Ok. Now I read somewhere not to over tighten the IAC so, I went out and gave the screws one twist each. The car stablizes and maintains the RPMs now. I still have the issue of the car shutting off. It does it randomly in park. The car will be sitting on about 900 RPMs, I can still hear some struggling from the muffler without drops from the RPMs tho, and then suddenly it will go from 900 to 0.

my two cents, check all vac hoses, every one,900 rpm is to high for park, another is the PCV valve, for sure hoses to it feel all around and underneath hoses for holes leaks etc,if u havent changed the PCV try it,have had issues in the past with it CC

Good advice from CC. For both banks to come up with a lean condition, a vacuum leak at the air intake is a good possibility. The computer compensates for vacuum leaks , but you have to have a good sized one. Has anyone tried to spray choke cleaner to check for any leaks?

Ok, I just got it back from the mechanic. This guy had a machine that filled the engine with red smoke, and he found 2 hoses that needed replacing deep down inside the engine, on the underbelly.

I also needed a PFE sensor (or was it valve, sensor I think). The car runs like new. I am glad this headache is finally over!
