Default Catalytic Converter / Y Pipe

I have a 99 Taurus. 3.0 V6 24 Valve, Duratec Motor. My son drove over a rock and damaged one of the converters on the Y Pipe. I had a friend of a friend look at it and told me it would costs about $650.00 to REPLACE the Y Pipe with Original OEM Parts He claimed the use of aftermarket converters would burn up the computer.

My question is this: has anyone had any experience with aftermarket converters and if so was it good orbad. Any thoughts anyone??????????????????

Usually this configuration does not allow the installation of AM converters because of limited room. However if there is a universal converter listed in any catalog then it should be okay. I've put several aftermarket converters on at my shop and never heard of such a thing happening.
