Default Ignition bell going off.

I have a 2001 Taurus , the ignition bell is going off without the key in it. Plus I can't lock the doors by the power locks because the ignition thinks the key is still in it ...anyone know problem.

There's a plastic insert that houses a grounding tab for the key lockset. The plastic piece slides onto the colulmn assembly with the lockset removed and it breaks the plastic over time and the tab shorts out the key chime. Two ways to fix it are,, remove the lockset, column cover, and slide off or remove the tab and tape it and tuck it in behind the cover. Other option is to replace the short harness.. There isn't a repair part/harness end to repair the broken piece, and if the tab is removed or wire cut, the key chime won't activate. I generally dont like disabling any safety device, but even my own truck has the tab removed. My truck has remote start and the loose tab would randomly activate the key sense and the truck wouldn't start as well as chime with the keys removed. Sometimes the wing portion of the lockset can come loose fom the lockset body as well, causing the lockset to not rotate completely back but generally it makes for difficult insert/remove of the key..
