Default EGR valve help

I have a 95 T-bird 4.6L model. I have an EGr Valve code comming up and bucking when accelerating, seems ok at steady speeds. Im finding that according to most repair manuals i have to hoist the engine up and down to replace the EGR Valve, but before i do this i have had a lot of people tell me that it could also be the DPFE Sensor. How exactly can i tell for sure which one it is before i go through all the trouble to replace it. Also would either one cause smoke to come from the exhaust while both driving and idling, not a lot but just a little smoke?
