Well this car is over 20 years old but it could still be warning you of something coming. Try an oil and oil filter change with 10W40 oil if your engine has over 100,000 miles. Could be blockage from dirt. If you change oil regularly it could be a sensor beginning to detect a problem. A good old scanner/tester would solve that. With the 80's came a lot of electrical B.S. so be prepared for it to not be so easy to solve. At least "check engine" means the engine - but it has many components - EGR, catalytic converters (engine exhaust), more elaborate engine computers and so much more. First - this car is around the switching years - is your engine carbureted or fuel injected? Also what size engine is it?

thanks for your reply. my manual says that the engine light means oil or temperature. its a fuel injected 5.0l (302). i had my oil and filter changed about 500 miles ago they put 10w30 in it ,
about along then was when the engine light started. i have also heard the rods knocking sometimes just after it cranks.
a mechcanic close to where i live said to add a quart of transmisson fluid in the crankcase and it would clean up things
but it seems to be that if it was clean the knocks would be worse , what you say?
is putting in rod inserts easy in this 84 thunderbird?
thanks again
