Default E350 won't go all the way into park

I have been having trouble with my 02 E350 turbodiesel not going into park. Initially it was an intermittant problem but now it's constant. When the problem started I could get the lever into park with some effort. Basically the further I can go is Reverse and I can remove the key from the ignition and the steering does lock. I looked for a linkage adjustment on the transmission but it seems I have a cable with no adjustment. My mechanic thinks it's in the linkage in the steering column, I'm thinking I need a new cable. Anyone have an idea what the cause/fix is with this?

Are all the other ranges/positions (other than Park) good with no position 'hunting' or excessive loose feel?

NO seems everything is shifted one position to the left. IMO the "play" in the shift lever seems normal.

Default upon closer inspection

I have to pull the shift lever back and towards 2nd to get it into drive. Once in drive, it's in the normal detent for drive.
