Default ESCORT ZX2 BRAKE LIGHT PROBLEM

My daughter called from college and told me her brake lights won't go out unless she puts her foot behind the pedal and pulls it back toward her. If she lets it go, it falls down enough to make the lights go on again. Doesn't matter if the car is running or not. It is a 1999 Escort ZX2. Any suggestions on what could be the cause of this problem?

Sounds like somehow the brake light switch has become misadjusted. Mabey lost a retaining clip.

Could be as simple as an BPP adjustment... Stands for 'Brake Pedal Position' Switch..

Here's a couple of pics of the switch/connector, then it'srelation to the pedal arm.. Make sure there is no 'drag' at the top of the pedals travel before adjustment.. .

Disconnect the brake pedal positionswitch electrical connector.

Loosen the 'B' locknuts and then turn the 'A' BPP switch until it does not contact the brake pedal.
Tighten the BPP switch until it contacts the brake pedal,, and then turn it an additional 1/2 turn
