Default I could use a bit of help

I am working on a 02 mercury mountaineer and the owner of the thing and they're scared to death when they driving it, saying that it's making a scraping and popping noise and I can't hear it or get it to make the noise so that I can fix it. The engine is a 4.0 V 6 with the auto transmission and to top it all off it is all wheel drive. Any help as to what they're worried about would be greatly appreciated

Hi Grindman !
I don't know the answer to your request, but since you can't get it to make the noise when you drive it maybe if you have them drive it with you in the vehicle they might be able to make it happen. Those 4.0 L. engines were noted for timing chain problems and some of the engines had to be pulled to repair the rear chain parts. Not really one of Ford's better ideas. What do you think ?

I have had them drive it with me as the passenger and it won't do it at all. I am beginning to think that there's no need to worry about it and drive until the something breaks and I might be able to get the thing fixed.

I was going to suggest front end/suspension issues but those sounds would be very easily duplicated. Good luck!

if you can't duplicate the noise do not even try a repair....it would be guess work.
either have them leave the vehicle with you for a couple days with a description of the conditions necessary for the noise to happen or have them return when the noise is present.

A suspension check for obvious worn parts is a good idea.

Well I got it fixed and it turned out to be the rear knuckle on both sides . I haven't heard from them since I changed them out. So I guess no longer a problem with it.

Well I have a different vehicle that I could use some advice on. I am working on a 2005 mercury grand marque 4.6 engine doesn't matter the mileage on this one because some how it won't let me take it out of park after I replaced the module for the headlights. I was able to move the gear selector after replacement of the steering column. And this is what's got me puzzled. It starts up with no issues but, I still can't get it out of park. Any idea would be greatly appreciated

Have you checked the brake safety (interlock) switch by the brake pedal? Maybe not getting a signal to the tranny.
