Have a strange noise not happening all the time. 117,000 on the SUV. When driving I get a Howl/Whine sound that comes and goes at different speeds usually below 35. Took it to the dealer and of course it wan't happening. Any ideas?

Hello,

I have a question about your Tranny noise...did it start out as a slight knock? Anywhere below 15 mph, I notice a slight knock on my explorer....it's almost as if a hinge needed grease. The noise seems to be located below the driver (directly in front). I would appreciate your response.

Best,

Eric

New member-Glad to be here.
My Explorer is also a 1995 XLT 4.0 auto with 112k. I also have the EXACT same noise! Mine comes on at speeds over 35 MPH. Really at highway speed. Sounds like a hi whine noise in rear that comes and goes with throttle. Off throttle and it goes away, barely touch it and it is back. Going to have it looked at sometime soon. My guess is it might be the U-joint but any other folks with an opinion would help us greatly.
