I think that both would work, go with the most economical method.

well, i picked up the truck and its a 88. its got a A4LD auto 4 speed overdrive. i got the tranny book with it, and it showed where they guy took out and replaced parts, and everything. he put that the thrust plate was broken but he still put the tranny back together. now i have to replace the thrust plate, clutch packs for low and high reverse and drive. someone told me that drive and reverse ran off the same pack of clutches but just geared lower???? dont know if thats right but i guess ill find out. if its cheaper than rebuilding this tranny i might put a manual in it. that might be another project in itself. but a truck with a straight body, strong motor, and good tires aint bad even if it dont gotta tranny ( but its the money you gotta put into the damn thing is what starts costing you.) what is cheaper? a rebuild or a used tranny i can use parts off of? thanks for any help. -Ryen-

well, im thinkin if this tranny is gonna cost more then a manual just to rebuild, why spend the money if you dont know what the problem is right? how easy would it be to convert to manual form auto? i'd just have to put in a master cilinder, the lines, and the pedal, and different linkage right?

How much is your time worth...?
I'd save my time and just buy a rebuilt auto.
After all of the misc. parts for the conversion I bet you'd end up spending just as much.

hey, i tore the tranny apart and the forward clutch drum is shot and worthless. the seals went out in the pump which burned up my clutches. i priced a forward clutch hub, and a rebuild kit for new gaskets, seals, clutches and friction plates. i figure ill be spending about $175 to rebuild it again.
