Good day everyone. I am in the market for a used Ford Ranger & need help deciding which engine would be the better choice. Are there any appreciable differences in durability or whatever between the 3.0 and the 4.0 that I should know about? I read that the 4.0 is actually a punched out 3.0 but I wonder if that made a good engine or not? I had good success with the 4.3 Chev engine in an Astro so I am leaning toward the 4.0 if they are comperable. Comments, good or bad would be most appreciated. Thanks

My only experience is with the 4.0. My 90 has the 4.0. It has about 90,000 miles on it. Haven't had any major repairs, just the basic maintenance. And still runs great.

I had a 4.0 w/ a 5 speed, it was one of the quikest things I've driven, other than my 03 Mustang GT. GO WITH THE 4.0!!!!

Go with the 4.0. I have one and i'm in love. It tows, drives, and they last a long time as long as you keep up on the maint. Also a side not. It will smoke the 4.3 xtremes all day.

What year are you looking at. I have a 05 and 97. The 4.0 is the best over the3.0. But the older ones like my 97 have head gasket problems. Had to have them replaced because they were allowing antifreeze to be sucked into the cylinders. You should look into this. By the way I did this repair in 05 and had 90000 miles on the truck. Cost 1200 at ford.

i have a 3.0 in my 91 and it is just bullet proof! the 4.0 should get more power and be better with the 4x4 system. the 4.3 in the s10/astro is very similar in power
