I have a 99 Ranger XLT 2.5L I4 with 2 plugs/cylinder. The passenger-side plugs are easy enough to get to, but the driver side plugs are hidden by what looks like the exhaust manifold so that I can't get to them with any sort of swivel socket or anything else. Does anybody have any tips or tricks or do I just have to take a lot of parts off?

I have to change the ones on my '89 as they have around 100,000 on them and I know that no. 2 is easy, no. 3 looks like a real doozy yet possible. I'm not too sure about no.4.  I'm thinking I might have to take off the manifold as it would probably be easier.

The plugs can be done without removing anything on that side, yes they are tedious, but if you don't know an exhaust manifold from an intake manifold it may not be your cup of tea.  There is really no offense meant by that, but once you reach them you have to ensure you start threads straight or you will have crossthreading issues.  They are hard to reach, but it can be done.  If you don't want to attempt just pay to have those 4 replaced.

OK, so it''s two years later. This is ruger1022. I''m replying to myself, I just forgot my password and am not using my old email address anymore. Anyway, I recently got all the spark plugs out. The ones on the passenger side were easy to get to, no problem, I just had to remove the breather hose from the throttle body and some other little stuff. The two plugs closer to the radiator on the driver side were somewhat more difficult, but I was able to get to them with some patience. For the other two driver side plugs, closer to the firewall, I had to get help from a friend. The only way I could get access to remove the boots was to lay on the ground and pull them from underneath. Then, still on the ground, I guided the 5/8" spark plug socket on a 10" extension onto the spark plug as my friend held it from the top. Be careful removing the socket because it could get caught on the intake manifold and fall on someone''s (my) face . Then I had to thread in the spark plug from the bottom and attach the extension through the top. Do the same thing for the other plug. You could probably do this with just one person. It would just be a lot of getting under and out from under the truck. As far as paying someone to do the plugs, my dad paid a dealership to do them when he bought the truck for me in ''04. They only did the passenger side ones.
