Got a '96 taurus. Had to replace the power steering pump. Got that done, and the system bleed. I started it up, and then cycled the steering to see if it worked, and if I turn the steering wheel until it stops turning, something (can't see as I'm in the car) locks up and the belt starts slipping and smoking. Works if I turn the other way too, buy only if I turn it all the way.

Is the P/S pump that much harder to turn when you max out the steering wheel? The belt got coated in alot of P/S fluid from when the pump went out, so it may be putting *just* enough resistance to make it spin on the pulley?

Looking for any suggestions.
thanks

remove the belt,,spray the pulleys down with brake parts cleaner.. wipe the pulleys down with a clean rag and install a new belt..should do the trick..also you NEVER want to turn the wheel to that full stop position ..it will damage the pump for sure ...
