Zac000 -> 98 3.0 DOHC PCV Valve (8/15/2006 4:17:38 PM)

Can someone give me some advice on how to change the PCV Valve on a 3.0 DOHC engine. The check engine light came on, I used a OBD2 and it came back with System too lean. I have taken apart the whole intake and checked for a leak, cleaned the MAF, Replaced the MAF. So now I figure that its time to check the PCV. Only problem is I cant find it. The Haynes manual only has a little drawing that doesnt help much. I need to put the car through DEQ by the 18th so any help you could give me with this would be much appreciated... Maybe a website where there are instructions on how to do it, or a real picture of the engine from the rear showing the PCV. Do I need to take the whole manifold off? Am I even going in the right direction with this? PLEASE HELP!

P0171 and P0174

  • P0171 System too Lean (Bank 1)
  • P0174 System too Lean (Bank 2)
  • Not shure how to fix these but I would start on looking for a vacuum leak.
  • As for the PCV I have a regular 3.0 mine is on the driver's side valve cover by the fire wall.I would follow one of the thicked vacuum line's to find the PVC. I will see if I can find more info for you.

I have visually checked all the hoses for a hole. Whats the best way I can test it on my own? I dont think I would feel comfortable doing a smoke test on my own in my garage.

For a vacuum leak test? Spray gumout around the suspected area of vacuum leak with the engine running outside.When you hear the engine sound change your in the right area of the leak.(Be carfull no to spray it on the paint if you do wipe it up right away) As for the code's the pcv might do the trick.Rember after any repair check engine related clear the code's by disconnecting the battery for 5 minutes.

I have been resetting it with the Diagnostics tool. Thats not as good?

Zac000. You are resetting the code the proper way. The codes you gave are for something that will affect both banks of the engine. Make syre the air intake hose is secure and there are no leaks after the MAF sensor. If your tool will read the PIDS, look at the long term fuel trims on bank one and bank two. It should be somewhere between -10 to +10. Anything over that, + or -< will cause a code to set. The synptoms are for a vacuum leak, just a matter of finding it. Maybe this will help.
