1990 Ford Ranger v6 2.9L with 119k miles starts and runs fine, but lags when leaving from a stop. Once the truck is over 2k rpm, it takes off and has proper torque. The smog tech once removed and reinstalled a small grey plug on the end of an electrical pigtail near the back of the engine bay, it did idle smoother for the test and passed, but he said it was used for California emissions and octane standards. Could there be other parts needed like oxygen sensor, idle control valve cleaning??

Things to think about! have you recently switched were you get your gas? Bad Gas! Have you done a tune up withinn 15k miles. check air filter, fuel filter, change oil and see how that works for you. Check the simple stuff first then move to the complex! save yourself some money that way!

I own a 1984/86 w/ the same engine. I too have notice that I have to keep the rpm's higher otherwise it lags hard. sometime it will actually slow down rather than speed up. I am putting on a new muffler and getting a tune up in the next few weeks. This is really annoying, especially when starting first at a stoplight.

I did a partial tune up in the last 1k: cap, rotor, air filter, oil change. Next will be the fuel filter, plugs and wires in the next week. Keep you posted on my findings. Thanks! George.

, I would test the TPS an see if its in range , an also do the sweep test on it , There maybe a bad spot in it , Some times on those carbon rotors you will end up with a low spot it dont make contact , which just might explain the slowing down thing you said it seems to have . Thats My 2 cents-- spend it wisely ,,,{ An see this is where it would be nice if we had a lil pull down menu that covered TPS adj. with pictures !!!!! } PATRICK you reading this one ???
