Whenever i press my brake pedal down and then let go my brake lights stay on. I have to pull the pedal up with my foot to make them turn off. How do i fix that?

First go down and look to make sure nothing is actually sticking. Sounds to me like the stop light switch is bad. Replace that first.

I looked and nothing was sticking. I dont know a whole lot about this..but i dont think its a switch. its just that my pedal isnt coming back up all the way

You checked this switch? It should be normally pressed down (brake lights off) and when you press the brakes the swith rises and lights the brake lights

Other than that, how's your brakes? Are they sloppy, does the pedal go all the way to the floor? Is there a lot of pressing needed to brake? Does the pedal return quickly?

It could air in your brake lines, try bleeding them. It's rather simple to do. Remove the tires, locate the bleeder valve on the calipers. be sure its not too rusted to loosen. ive sheared many of them off and youre then buying new calipers.

once you loosened but not opened the valve, have some apply pressure to the breaks (like theyre breaking normally).

open the valve which will squirt brake fluid (and air) out, and close the valve before your helper pushes the pedal to the floor/releases (open it for about 1.5-2.0 seconds). Do this a few times or until your help gets bored and leaves. then tighten the valve up. repeat for the other side. you should only really need to do the front brakes (unless you have rear disc brakes). in that case, start from the farthest wheel from your brake fluid reservoir and work your way up.

you can get a one-person brake bleeding kit from autozone. get extra fluid and make sure whatever you do the reservoir doesnt go dry or you'll be doing it all over again.

woah thats alot to do haha. i dont think its my pedal cause i had problems with that before and i got that fixed and its been working great. i think i should look into the bleeding though. its gotten to the point where its a habit for me to pull up on the brake pedal after i use it. Thats not good haha. i dont even notice it anymore. but thank you alot and im gonna look into that.

What year ?

Did you try adjusting the BPP switch? If the pedal 'seems' to be in a normal position 'and' function, then the brake light switch should/can be adjusted.. If by lifting 'only' the pedals freeplay up cancels the brake lights than it's most likely the switch..

Un loosen the lock nut, if there's any gap between the BPP switch and the lever turn the switch in until it makes contact, then an additional 1/2 turn..
