I recently bought a '94 E150 Conversion Van to put a wheel chair lift in. It has 112,000 miles on the 351 Windsor. It cuts out or misses indiscriminantly at idle, cruising on level ground, and more often while under a load such as climbing a grade(along with a slight pinging). It never does it when I kick it down. It sometimes does it so violently that the van bucks. The previous owner thought it was something to do with the tranny so he had work done on that, including a complete tear down. He bought the van at 40,000 mi. and said it has done it all along. He said it was only occasionally but it does it constantly. It doesn't always idle down when it warms up, and on 3 or 4 occasions has died when it did idle down and once at a stop sign.

I changed the fuel filter right away after I bought it at 111,000 mi. That made no difference. I saw at night with the lights off that I had a light show under the hood so I replaced the coil, plugs, wires, dist. cap and rotor, air filter and PCV valve. It ran a little better but the engine still cuts out. I brought it in to an independant garage for diagnostics and they said the 0x Sensor was weak so I replaced that. Still no change.

I finally brought it to a Ford Dealer and the service tech's first idea was that the Throttle Position Sensor was bad but it tested ok. They said they were only guessing because the on board diagnostics for that year vehicle wasn't very advanced, but they thought the Ignition Module might be bad, it wasn't, so I eat a new one. The next guess was the Pick Up Coil but it tested ok. After a week of testing by the process of elimination they are guessing the EGR valve may be leaking. The service manager said it would cure the idle problems and that it may or may not cure the miss at driving speeds. I found a Haynes manual and it sounds like the EGR could be the culprit but if anyone has had some similar problems or experience with the fixes, I could sure use some input before I go broke.

Thanks in advance,
ponyboi

Here's an update. The EGR valve was installed today but did not cure the problem. Please, If anyone out there has any suggestions, they will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

hello gweedo,

after a complete tune up by me and over $1,000.00 of un-necessary parts and labor at the Ford dealership, it turned out to be the PCM, which had been causing trouble for the second owner since 40,000 miles. I bought it with 111,000 miles on it. But all is fine now. Also be sure to check all the vacuum lines, esp. to the EGR valve. Ford used a plastic line that gets brittle and cracks after a few years. Good Luck!
