Just bought my son 98 Explorer XLT. Seller said check engine light had just come on. Took it to mechanic for computer read out and he says the catalytic converter needs replacing. Ford Parts quotes $702.
Is it OK to replace this with a junkyard converter to save money? Can this be done myself in my driveway or is it necessary to pay a mechanic??

Thanks for any suggestions.

they make universal converters for these, you can get them at auto zone for about $50 a piece but you will still have to have someone cut your pipes and weld them in. Was the $702 for both of them or one of them because you can get the ones that all you have to do is bolt them in from auto zone also for cheaper than that
