We have a 95 Aerostar. Over the weekend, when we could not get it to a mechanic, the battery charge light came on. Today, as it sat idling outside, it died. When we tried to restart it, it acted like the battery had died. But, about 15 minutes later, it started again. Is it possible that the battery just needs replacing, or is the problem something deeper? We appreciate all the help. -Tracy Bookman

Thank you for the information! do you have any suggestions about finding instructions on how to replace it? I'm not at all mechanically inclined, but have successfully worked on my cars before when I've had adequate instructions. Thanks again!! -Tracy

I agree with Wheelsup that the problem is probably the alternator. Just to make sure though, since alternators are very expensive and can be a real pita to replace, I'd drive over to AutoZone and have the alternator tested for free (take jumper cables with you). If you do buy a new alternator from AutoZone, have them test it also before you leave the store (some have been known to be bad before they leave the store, but I still have a lot of faith in the company's products regardless). As far as alternator removal and installation, maybe one of the guys can provide a link for you. However, seeing how your Aerostar is now about 12 years old, there's going to be more problems, as with any other older vehicle, so I'd highly recommend buying a Hayne's service manual (don't get a Chilton's manual - please trust me on that - I know from experience).
