What was the original reason for pulling the heads? Head gasket failure I'd assume..

So,,,,

'Both' heads were replaced, new head gaskets, AND new headbolts? Were the heads reman. replacements, used, or the originals as rebuilds? Are you certain the head gasket/s weren't damaged during the build/install.. Had it ever seriously overheated?

Are the heads new?
Just the gaskets?
Sounds like a crack in the cylinder head.

It sounds like a crack in the head, or the head gasket got damaged during the install process.

Could also be coolant leaking through the the lower timing cover bolt. The 3.8 has a timing cover bolt that extends into the water jacket that the thread seal can deteriorate and cause coolant to leak on to the crank thrust bearing. To check start the engine cold run 10-15 seconds (yes second) to pressureize coolant system, shut down and check the edge of the catalatic converter for coolant. You will also tend to smell the sweet smell of cooked coolant but never find a wet spot and the water pump will not be the source. I had a 95 W-star bought used, found leak, took to dealer for leak, leak was in timing cover and had to replace timing chain. 5 weeks later started getting bottom end noise, end up having to have new motor.
