Just bought a used 07 Taurus from a non-Ford dealer. It came with only one key. I'm told that to get extra copies I need to have the Ford dealer go into the computer and do some reprogramming first before key copies can be made, for about $100 or so. Is there any other way of doing this, or do i need to just bite the bullet and spend the money? Apparently if I had two keys already, this would not be such a big deal to copy them.

i have the same problem, i bought a 1999 ford taurus se sport from a non-ford dealership and they said i would have to go to the ford place too.

I had the same problem with my 99 SE. I got the car from a family member who only had 1 key. I cost me $150 at the dealership for the new key. Again, they said it would be cheaper if I had 2 keys. You might be able to save a few bucks by purchasing an uncut key on Ebay, but most of the cost was for cutting and programming.

Ok I can help you guys out. First this is what the real problem is. The car has a passive anti-theft device installed(so if your insurance doesn't know this tell them you should get a discount) Its a chiped key, meaning the key has a microship that sends out a signal to a reciever in the switch to start the engine. You can't just buy a uncut key and have it work either because you have to program the car to reconize the key. Each key has its own little code it sends out.

There are two ways of getting around this. The first way totally disables the anti-theft system, which is what I did because I did it myself for free. The other allows you to still have the anti-theft feature but will cost you some money. Like 80 bucks. But the steps are practically the same.

First way. Dismantel your steering colum to get to the ignition switch. If you don't know how to do it you should be able to look it up on line. Go to the "Bulldog Security" website. Its who my remote starter is from and they are very detailed. Remove the black plastic piece from around the ignition switch. It will have a thin wire coming out of it. Now it is a whole piece so don't break it. Though it is pretty sturdy. Once you have it off all you have to do is put a working chiped key inside the ring and tape it there. Now you can use a standard key to start the car. Just hide the taped ring with the key inside your steering column or under the dash.

The other way is to buy a device that does this same thing except it only works when you have a remote start. I think it is on the Bulldog security web site as well.
