Great Explanation on the Dual Mass Flywheel.  I get it! I sincerely appreciate your time.  Any chance that this rattling at idle could/would damage anything?  I don't let it idle much because of the rattle?

It has been a while since your post. However, the comment manual transmission was used and it sparked my interest. I've got a 99 F350 7.3L Automatic that I just took in for the recall on the position sensor and the dealer told me it was too loud and my dual-flywheel was coming apart. So I went and listened. Told him it always sounded like that to me. He compared it to a newer truck that was ideling the had the insulated intercooler. I just told him, Good Try, I'll take it back home and put it away as soon as you do the recall. Question is, is there any way of testing it or visual inspection, or do I even have one?
Thanks

If you have an automatic you have the 4R100 trans.. 99 was the problem year for the torque converter rattle, or what sounds like a 'bearings in a can' rattle at idle.. With a torque converter (auto) you don't have a dual mass flywheel (manual).. Pretty easy to listen down low around the trans/bellhousing an hear the rattle.. Some can be worse than others, usually depending on mileage/use ect. but was a design problem.. You can test the converter for the noise/condition by 'momentarily' grounding the converter clutch solenoid circuit (pin 54) P/Y wire on/at the trans connector and it'll apply the converter clutch (while grounded) and the rattle noise should stop.. If so, the fix is a replacement converter if the noise is excessive..
