2000 Ford exp 5.4 triton- transmission issue? - 2/27/2007 7:35:25 PM    punkinshine   Posts: 3 Score: 0 Joined: 2/27/2007 Status: offline So I'm driving down the road and as I hit between 45-55 mph I hear a short grinding noise, only for one second, like I'm going over a median(like ones with those little linesacross them.) I've been driving it this way for a while now. It's not getting worse but it is still happening. I love my truck and this has been my only complaint. Any idea of what this could be? Post #: 1

Torque converter 'shudder' occurs generally when the unit locks the TCC (Torque Converter Clutch) at lower speed and/or during initial lock up, and usually is or noticed during moderate acceleration like entering the highway ect without kick down and torque application is reasonably high. High mileage units are affected more, and 'can' at times break the clutch loose or slip/shudder without  a lot of power being put through the clutch/trans.. Sometimes servicing the unit will help with the condition as fluid over time/heat/mileage will break down the fluids viscosity with fluid shear, as well as loosing friction properties.. So I will be taking it in and will have them check it out. I have a warranty good for another 6 months so hopefully that will take care of anything major. I just wanted to know if anyone else had this problem and what it may cost to fix. I also was concerned if it would affect towing this summer. Thanks for your help. (in reply to Hayapower) Post #: 5
