'92 Escort 1.9 No Heat - 3/6/2007 9:29:16 PM    burnoutmaster   Posts: 4 Score: 0 Joined: 3/6/2007 Status: offline My 92 Escort has very poor heat and I've checked everything I can think of. Is there a special way to bleed the coolant on this engine because that is the only thing I can think of, maybe I have a big air bubble somewhere. A friend just had a new water pump put on his escort wagon and he said his heat also now sucks. Post #: 1

RE: '92 Escort 1.9 No Heat - 3/7/2007 5:02:45 PM    goinstrong   Posts: 922 Score: 0 Joined: 2/24/2007 Status: offline  You can install a new thermostat, flush the coolant system, and check for a leaking heater core or bad heater fan motor. If non of these - a bad circuit (switch or wire) to the fan or temperature switch in the blower housing could be at fault. I'd look for leaks first (sometimes the heater core leaks onto the carpet up under the dash) or a loose clamp or bad hose (while it's hot and running). Then I'd think about checking switches and thermostat switch in blower housing. Then (provided I found nothing there) I would get a thermostat (engine), heater core and antifreeze and flush and start with the flush and revamp the whole deal at once. If you don't have the money for the whole deal and you don't have leaks just try the flush out first (provided there's no oil or leaks in the radiator or anything odd). When you finish the flush - carefully pressure-wash the debris and road grime out of the AC and regular radiators to help the air to flow easier to cool the coolant. The fan does work so that is not the problem it just blows luke warm air all the time. After a long ride and the whole inside warms up then it seems to just keep up if you leave it on the high fan setting and don't open a window. By a long ride I mean 45 mins. or more. On the 20 min. ride to work everyday it never warms the inside of the car up with temps 35 or below. I personally checked the heater core for flow and it looked great with just a garden hose no delay or reduced flow. (in reply to burnoutmaster) Post #: 3

A lower temp. thermostat will take longer to heat up, but on the plus side - will be easier on your engine by warming the engine more slowly. (in reply to burnoutmaster) Post #: 4

I think my problem maybe be inside the heater box because it doesn't blow much air out of the vents and just about stopped today. The fan sounds good but I'm thinking the heater box is full of junk. I had a 92 Grand Am the car ran great. However, after a couple of years the A/C did not seem to be able to keep it cool enough, also I had noticed when I was in upstate New York once that I was having trouble keeping the inside warm driving back roads for an hour at 55mph or less. Finall;y got on I88 and once up to 65-70mph the car started to warm up inside (I was starting to get frost on the inside of the side windows at the rear). I final had A/C checked, the shop was someone I knew and do to it being cheaper to put in 2-3lbs R134 than 1/2lb of R-12 system was converted. Still they noticed that the interior would not cool down well even though temp at the vent read 45-50 degrees. They checked everything short of removing the dash, all fine even the air flow felt okay. I went home and removed the fan resistor from air box to look at condensor with flash light. It had had a minor leak and the oil picked up dust and was slowing air flow and heat/cooling exchange. I used simple green and hot water (hook house up to washer machine hot water) to clean it down. I was making Ice and roasting BBQ after that. FYI...The water will get inside the car, by the time I finished had 2+ inches in from floor board. I got on most with spunge but found that vac at car wash really sucks up the water, even from the pad. Then heat up the interior, set it in the sun on a warm day with less than an 1 inch of opening in each window. This will produce the most heat from the sun but still allow water vapor to escape. What the heck WERE you washing? THE HEATER CORE. I can't believe you hosed your car for a dirty heater core/connection. That's a great way to rust your floorboards. (in reply to tomb1269) Post #: 10
