My wagon has a really loud, high pitched, engine whine.  It's been doing it for a while.  The whine increases as the engine revs up in all gears, including park and neutral.  I replaced the power steering pump since it was going bad and a likely source of the whining, but that didn't help. The car has 90K miles on it. Is it the timing belt?

Sorry - forgot to tell you about the car!  It's a '94 Taurus GL.  It's got a 3.0L V6.  It's the regular engine, not the 24 valve one.

Could be dry alternator bearings. You could try greasing them.

Hey thanks - you were right on target. I took it to my mechanic's shop and two of his men listened to it and said gave the same diagnosis. Bearings are shot - so I'm getting a new alternator put on it in the morning.
