Auto tran, 5.0L engine.
First it ran rough, then quit. Then ran again, quit when put into drive.  Changed Air and fuel filter, got a code 31/32 from the OBD II sys. EGR Valve looks to be in great shape, EVP sensor (the sensor that sits on the valve) tested 5Vorange wire and .205 volts to the brn/grn wire (so good power and chiltons said if I get less than .67 V to the other one the senson should be good.)  EGR valve wouldn't completely keep the truck from starting would it?

The in line fuel pump is less than a year old.  Problem the same regardless of which fuel tank I select. I still think it might be a fuel issue since I have never had ignition problems, and no matter how often I have turned it over I smell no gas.

What would be the best way to troubleshoot the fuel?  The pumps ... are they supposed to be on all the time even when the engine is not running?  (If it was carburated I could spray some starter fluid...)

the pumps just kick on when you first turn on the key for a split second, and know egr shouldnt keep truck from starting. easy check for fuel pump is to see if the system has pressure

Sounds like a good idea, how is that done?.. simply remove a fuel line?

you can or on the pressure regulater on top of the intak there by the fuel rale there is a little threaded nipple that looks like the top to a valve stem on your tire and it has a core just like they do.... you just press the center with a small screwdriver and if fuel shoots out its pressurized if not you have a problem of some sorts, when you first turn the key on do you here the fuel pump engage?Jeff

Aftermarket pumps run constantly and self-neutralize while running to have the correct pressure always there. They can go bad after as little as a year (especially if made by Mr. Gasket). Be careful to have a decent rag over your hand and safety glasses on if you discharge and check the fuel pressure because high pressure fuel can penetrate your skin and seep right into your veins. EGR can stop good running of engine but usually NEVER shuts it off. Have you checked the fuel filter? By the way - if you made a mistake and bought the Mr. Gasket red fuel pump be warned - it's got low pressure for a little go-cart or lawnmower or something.
