All, I have a 2001 F-250 with 7.3L powerstroke.  I had to have the Cam Shaft Position Sensor replaced at about 36,000 miles.  I now have 198,000 miles and have been experincing engine cut out for about a month.  Going down the road at highway speed and it is like the engine quits and the restarts all in about .5 seconds.  Then yesterday I am sitting in traffic and the engine completely died twice, both times the engine restarted very quickly when I turned over the starter.  The second time it died, the service engine soon light came on.  I finally got to a place I could stop and I plugged in my SuperChips programmer to read the codes.  The only code that came up was P0344, which states it is an "intermittnet Cam Shaft Postion sensor code".  Here is my question, has anyone else had this same type problem with the 7.3?  I bought a new sensor last nigt for $160, do you think I should replace it and see what happens or should I have it checked out by a mechanic?  Any help would be gretaly appreicated!  BASSHAWK

On the time/s it wouldn't start or died did you have a tach signal? With 162K on the old one,  chances are its just another failure.. Actaully,, not bad service life for a CMP for a 7.3..

Thanks for the reply Hayapower.  I will go ahead and replace the CPS and keep the old one in case of emergency road side needs.  It still works, but with it now having died 3 times in 90 miles, I am not feeling the love for the old one.  BASSHAWK

You may try just cleaning the old one off gently next time (unless they're coming out in really foul shape).

I stopped by my mechanics shop on the way home this afternoon to have him swap it out.  He was not in, so when I got home I looked where he told me he "thought" it was.  It was not where he thought it was based on an older post that I pulled up a bit ago.  It looks like it is on the front of the engine between the pulleys sort of towards the passenger side?  I may try to swap it myself tomorrow.  I will then take your advise and clean the old one for an emergency spare.  BASSHAWK

Yeah. It would be worth the keeping if you could test it's function(s) when it's removed. That's $160 worth just to check.

Here's a pic of the location.. Generally they don't collect debris like the ABS/Speed sensors do.. A farily easy job to change one out, with only one bolt through the hold down bracket..

I've seen these deals collect debris like crazy. It all depends where you drive.
