1998 F150 5.4 won't shift from 2nd to 3rd

I have a 1998 F150 that I just purchased and I am having Transmission problems! I don't know if the whole transmission needs to be replaced or if it is a shifting sensor or if this is a minor problem that can be fixed without replacing the whole thing? It will go into 1st and 2nd gear but won't 3rd. When you run diagnostics on it the EGR code comes up! ANY SUGGESTIONS? HELP![:(]

EGR and intake manifold vacuum problem could be messing up the transmission vacuum. Bad converters can cause block pressures and ruin intake vacuum.
