Hi all, I need help with 2 different problems.
I have a 2002 f-150 4.6L Crew cab with 100k miles First issue is when I take off from a dead stop there is a noise coming from the rear of the truck that sounds like something is shifting or moving around. It is a deep solid thump. After moving the first time you never hear it again. It only happens when you go forward.Next, when I first start the truck in the mornings, it has a loud ticking noise coming from the engine area. After the truck warms up, the noise goes away. Any help would be appreciated.

For the first problem, I'd look to see if there is anything loose on the brakes in the rear of your truck.

For the second problem, how long does the ticking last? What part of the engine is it coming from (top, bottom, drivers side, etc.)? If you rev the engine, what happens to the sound? When did it start? Is there anything else you can tell us about it?

I do not see anything with the breaks however 1 of the shocks may be broke.

the motor sound is coming from down below, and the ticking gets faster if you rev the engine. but goes away after it warms up.

I had a similar issue with my 92 F-150. You might want to check to see if the parking brake is stuck. If the cable breaks, you can pull to unlatch it, but it won't come loose.

Brake or rear trouble sounds like no fun. The ticking is a valve tick. The lifter is slightly worn in it's seals and bleeds when it sits. When you start it oil pressure pumps it back up - noise stops and clearance is OK again. This happens a lot on many engines.

i have a thump like that on my truck also - come to find out i've got a bent tailshaft. I asked the mechanic if i should replace it - he said it wasn't bad - and since i don't put hardly ANY miles on my truck it'd be fine. but you can actually get up under there and move it back and forth. you might need to replace that and the yolk it's attached to if it's worn out.

I had similar sound for about a week before my tranny died. ('01 F150 5.4 V8 Automatic)

ticking is definetly lifters, mine does the same thing and will be much louder when its cold. Hope the other is not your tranny $$$$$$

Mine is doing the thump thing too and come to find out it's a broken leaf spring and the axle is shifting or rotating.
