hey guys did a search and it sounds like i have a pump issue

my mother came home today and said her power steering wasn't working, i went out and checked the fluid the first i noticed is the fluid is very very dirty and it is also overflowing the resovoir i'm thinking its a bad pump, there is a lot of whine when i try and turn the wheel, which was actually occuring before the power steering even went out.

so is it a pump? is it ok to drive the car or should i let it sit, thanks guys

What year vehicle and mileage?  The whine is normally the pump and if the fluid is that dirty, it may have taken out the seals in the rack and pinion unit.  You could start with a new pump, but flush the old fluid out of the system.
