We bought a used 2000 excursion with 80K miles on it. We noticed that it vibrates/shimmys a bit when you hit 65. The Ford dealer said that is a common problem and according to a Ford engineer, cannot be fixed. We have had the tires rotated and aligned, which helped some, but not too much. Anyone else have this problem? or ideas what may be causing it?

Take a look at the front hub bearings. I have a 2001 and have replaced the driver side one and now need to replace the passenger side one. You have to replace the hub assembly if the bearings are bad. It is not hard to do. You can check the hub bearings by jacking the front wheels off the ground and try wiggling the wheel by grabbing the top of the wheel and pushing in and out on the top to see if there is any play in the bearings. Since the wheels are fairly heavy so you will have to put some elbow grease into it. I hope this helps. Good luck.
