I have a 96 explorer with trans problems,  I just had it "rebuilt" so they say..  The problem is when shifting from first to second i feel some vibration then a loud noise. The noise is hard to describe it's not a thump or clunk, it's almost like the transmission is locking up.  I took the car back to the shop the first time and they couldn't hear anything . The next day the car started to make noise again so we went stright to the shop and took the mechanic for a test drive and he said that the transfer case is the cause, or the auto locking hubs. I think the trans shop just don't take actions and repair the trans that they just rebuilt a week and a half ago.
