It seemed as if there was a mention of not using synthetic transfluid in the Freestar. I would advise against this, it is my understanding that these trans's require Merco V a synthetic. I have been advised that they are very fussy about it, and even "Mercon V compatible" fluids should not be used.

tomb1269...You are right. Not using a synthetic in the Freestar transmission is a NO-NO. The MERCON®V ATF in most cases are a synthetic/petroleum blend. Ford's MOTORCRAFT version is farmed out to the lowest bidder, thus your get a minimum spec'd fluid. AMSOIL is a 100% synthetic fluid along with VALVOLINE's MERCON®V ATF. I stick with AMSOIL because for a few dollars more, it's very cheap insurance for my components.
