RE: anyone what the mpg for a 99 explorer is - 7/20/2007 7:21:41 AM    jamanred   Posts: 15 Score: 0 Joined: 7/12/2007 Status: offline The V8 gets slightly better gas mileage than the V6.  My V8 averages 300 miles to the 18 gallon tank  I drive mixed highway (80 miles an hour) and mixed city (with the air on)..  If I were to drive normally in the city, I get the same 300 miles to a tank.  Normal highway gets me 330/340 miles per tank.  Do the math.. Mine is a V6 4.0L making 17 mpg (300 miles/ tank to campare with jamanred's V8). I know mine is over the average though. A friend of mine easily gets out over 20 mpg on his identical model.
