I have a 99 5.4 w/roughly 92K miles and recently the odometer has started going out and then a few minutes later it will come back on??  Has anyone experienced anything like this?  Any suggestions on what it could be?

could it be the entire instrument cluster going bad??  I checked with the local dealer and he said it was very common for these to go bad.  Cost to replace instrument cluster at dealership: $550. and not having the vehicle for 3 days.  They have to send the odometer off to ford to get a new one??  I just love FORDS!!

Could be..

Is it just the odometer, or the speedo dropping out as well? Any harsh or extended rough trans shifts along with the cluster reading problem? Speed/ABS sensor failures are more common..

Cluster replacement is a relatively eay job.. Price of the cluster is right around 305.00.. You should be able to just supply the parts dept with your VIN/Reg and current mileage (so it can be set) and get a replacement cluster with the current mileage shown that won't tie the truck up for any lenght of time.. More so if you do the work yourself...

There's always the dismantler avenue as well, but nice to have the correct mileage ect..

There's an interesting article about the common intermittent odometer problems in Ford F-series pickup and large SUVs at http://doiop.com/kha55q

Also another article on Squidoo at  http://www.squidoo.com/ford-odometer-repair/

There's also a new do-it-yourself repair manual that shows how to quickly and easily fix the problem. I fixed mine for free in about 2 hours and it has worked like new ever since.
