O/D Off

Over Drive on a 2003 Ford Escape XLS 4X4
When should this feature be used and why?

THe OD off button is useful when towing especially up hill to keep the tranny from shifting back and forth in and out of OD under load.

Some use it for the same reason if the drive alot right at the 45 MPH point where the OD kicks in.

I just got the 03 escape about two weeks ago. And I was turning it “OFF” on streets and using it “ON” on highways. Would that be ok, or is it harmful on the tranny? Or should I just leave it “ON” all the time? I did notice that I get better mileage if it is on all the time. Would leaving it “ON” all the time be more harmful?

I have not heard of anyone that had problems turning it off even regularly. I turn it off often in city driving , again, if the tranny seems to be searching for a gear (in and out of O/D). The higher RPM will burn alittle more fuel but It has not hurt the tranny. It is a preference item. After all it was put there mostly to aid in towing which is the toughest thing your tranny will ever do.
