i bought a 94 escort with a 1.9 engine last year. it did not idle when i got it.i replaced plugs, wires and fuel filter but the problem was still there. i drove it all winter revving it at stops.i noticed that the check engine light would come on if i kept a consistent speed for too long.when i gave it a little more throttle it would turn off. if i kept a consistent speed for more than 10 seconds the car would seem to start cutting out, almost like the engine would stop getting spark for a split second.this would happen intermittently until i gave it more throttle. i pulled my car out last week and its doing the same thing but even worse.if i am stopped revving the engine for more than 20 seconds it seems to "load up" and when i put it in gear to accelerate it sounds like its misfiring and has no power. after about 10 seconds of acceleration it runs fine.its almost like the engine is loading up with fuel. another note on the idle problem...if i feather the gas and keep it running under 3000rpm it sounds like theres a misfire.the car is very quiet but you can hear it through the exhaust. i'm wondering if i have clogged cat.any ideas? im thinking of checking the cat and possibly replacing the idle air control valve. i already went through and checked for vacuum leaks.
