1999 Ford Escort 4 cyl Two Wheel Drive Automatic 109000 miles
----------------------------------------------------------------
I have a problem with my '99 Escort ZX2.
Everything was working fine (i just put 500mi on the car since i brought it), no signs of problems until yesterday when I turned the key on and the car cranks up but the engine stalls immediately. At that time I had the feeling that i felt a smell of burned plastic for a few seconds but it might not be related to the problem or it might have come from outside.
Anyway, the engine stalled i cracked it up a few times but the engine sputters a little and dies. If I press the acceleration right then, the engine will rev up until I release the acceleration and die again. Even if i hold the accel. pressed a little the engine will run but not like it should. As soon as I release the gas pedal the engine dies.
I changed the spark plugs and air filter to make sure they were ok.
If I remove the air intake from the engine and just let it absorb air from outside, the engine does not die but keeps sputtering.
I read the error codes with a rental computer. There is one error code:
"P0102 MAF or VAF A circuit Low Input" showed up.
I tried to replace the MAF sensor with two others (someone told me that the one I brought could be messed up so i tried again) and it did not fix the problem. I need to mention that I did not unplug the battery when i replaced the sensors but I did unplug it after that shortly.
Can anyone give me any other leads?
Thanks a lot!!!
