Tuarus_2000 -> 2000 Taurus Duratec #3 misfire P0302 ... Help (1/6/2008 9:27:37 AM)

I checked it with my scanner it says P0302 #3 misfire ... I have replaced the elbo for the PCV a while back it was split (common problem) and replaced DPFE a while back for other problems and it fixed those.

Now today I was at a stop light felt a stumble, left it running while I ran into the gas station and came out its still running and engine light is steady on, tried to pull out it feels like hardly any power and a rumble strip type of feeling, once at speed it would sort of power up normal and then feel like no power again stumble and such, came home checked it and code P0302 came up (no other codes at all).

Is this a common problem? ... I also changed the spark plugs about 10k miles ago ... any info on what to check would be great, and where is #3 cylinder on my car. Thanks!

Its a 24 valve Duratec 2000 Taurus 125k miles

Well, first you need to address the problem cylinder.  It is a misfire on number 2 cylinder.  Number 2 cylinder is the rear center spark plug. Click here for a diagram.

Can't get pic to post for some reason

Ok got that, #2 I was wrong on that ... thanks for telling me on that.

I have coil on plug ... I have a good volt meter is there a way to check the coil on plug ??

Also a way to check injector?

I am also going to get a new plug perhaps its bad.

You can use a test light on the coil connection to see if the test light flashes consistently.  If it does, you need to get a spark tester and test the coil in question to see if there is a bright blue spark.  If not, replace coil.  You can also look at the coil boot to be sure there is not a small burn mark through it.

Any moisture in the plug area?  Did you use any dielectrical grease on the plug boots when you replaced the plugs?  Moisture and no dielectrical grease can cause spark leakage, thus the misfire.  This occurs more after the engine warms up as the boot expands due to the heat allowing more leakage to occur.  I see this all the time.  Especially on higher mileage vehicles with original plug wires.  Since we use Coil-On-Plug/Boot units, the dielectrical grease is a must.  I also put some where the boot meets the valve cover.

don't shoot the messenger, but i have (what sounds like) a smiliar issue on my 2000 sel, however my car puts out the cyl 3 (front center) code.  i got the car for a song, knowing the check engine light was on.  while at idle, does your light flash for 30-60 seconds??  my car spent a week in at a mechanic and all signs lead to a bad (bent or chipped) valve or possible crack in the head.  have your compression checked. with 173,000 miles i am not going to spend the money to repair it.  i had the coil replaced (with a motorcraft unit) as well as the injectors cleaned, all 6 plugs were replaced, and the valve cover was pulled to inspect.  the compression is lower in cyl 3 than the others in the front.  sorry for what may be bad news, but that is where i am having the problem.
