Hello I have a 1996 Crown Victoria P71 and the instrument cluster works great except the speedometer and odometer stopped working all the other gauges work..... I scanned it the code was P0500 vehicle speed sensor (A) malfunction.....does that mean i need a new cluster?? I replaced the speed sensor on the transmission and that didn't help any info would be great thanks

Click here  Is this the one you replaced?  There are 2 on the transmission.  One is the output shaft speed sensor and it is located farther to the front.  If you replaced the correct one, look at the wiring and remove the sensor and be sure the gear on the output shaft is not loose or broken.

I replaced the one on the rear of the transmission where abouts on the front is it?? and is it the same type of sensor? please let me know thanks

If you replaced the rear sensor, that is the one that controlds the speedometer and odometer.  The Output Shaft sensor is about 8 inches directly ahead and slightly above the VSS.  I don't think that will be the problem tho.  You might want to check the associated wiring to the sensor.

I checked the wiring and right at the plug for the sensor the wires are frayed i don't know if this shorted out the sensor or just is not letting it work any ideas????????

You might try removing the wires and using heat shrink tubing around the wires to keep them separated.  This will rule out that wiring section as a problem.  The problem with that is you will probably have to lay on your back to do it.  Good luck.  Be careful not to break the locks on the connector that holds the wires in.
