I have a 2002 explorer XLS. I do not have the towing package and have the 4.0 SOHC engine. My question is: I want to know if it is safe or non-damageing to my engine and transmission if I pull a boat that is just under the factory weight capacities (3500#). The boat in question is on a single axle trailer and probably weighs around 3200#'s. I live in a very warm environment and I would need pull it over some bridges. I know the truck is capable of pulling it, but am I severely reducing the lifespan of my engine and or trans mission. I don't know how liberal Ford makes their towing capacity guidelines. Does anyone have any input on this subject, or am I just being paranoid. Thanks.

If your in the guidelines of the stated towing cap. Then I would say go for it.. Ford has made that 4.0L engine for a few yrs now . I like them myself. However I would suggest you install a tranny cooler for added protection. And get a Temp gauge installed in the Tranny as well. That way YOU can keep a eye on it. nothing will kill a tranny quicker then HEAT. I belive that it was Hayden that had a Temp to Lifespan chart. if I remember right anything over 100 degrees above normal operating temp like cut tranny life in HALF !!!!, Oh an if you do Tow I would step up on changing the Tranny oil more often -----------Now go catch some fish
