If your dimer is turned low, it may be hard or impossible to read with the lights on.
Also the dimmer could fail, do your other lights turn up and down?
Dumb, I know, but I thought I wasted a fuse or something once only to find one of the kids had
spun the dimmer down to zero.

The console can go bad, I have heard of it looking for info before.
Try googling it if you can''t find it here, the site where people charge for answers had it discussed - maybe you?
