I have a 92' Ford Ranger with 2.9 V6. It has 247,000 miles. I have been monitoring these symptoms for almost a year now: 1. engine misfiring, roughness, valve train noise initially when I start truck. then it clears up after a few minutes. 2. #2 cylinder spark plug frequently goes bad. Porcelain insulator is vaporized or plug threads are wet from oil. 3. Just in last week, white and blue smoke out tailpipe for 5 minutes after truck has been sitting a while. 4. Coolant and and oil is disappearing rapidly. Ok, is it definitely time for a new engine?

I hate to be the bad news man but you are right. Now it is just a matter of seeing how much an engine would cost you versus a new car. Especially if you are having any other issues with the vehicle it might be time to get rid of the 92'.
