I have a 01 Ranger 3.0 v6 that has 180,000 miles on her and the auto trans was just replaced. The problem now is that the truck has no power especially past 3000 rpm and you have to baby the throttle to get it to 3000 rpms.it will just bog after that and it also idles rough and also after a few miles it will really miss and jerk going down the road also there is no check engine light on.Things I have done today to no avail. New mass air flow sensor, new plug wires, new fuel filter.I have no idea what could be causing this.Could a fuel pump cause this? it misses and surges going down the road and you press on the throttle and she just bogs but doesent go.PLEASE SOMEONE HELP I cant throw much more money at that beast

When was the fuel filter replaced last? It sounds like a fuel delivery problem. I would start with a fuel filter. You could also put a pressure guage on the shrader valve located on the fuel rail and verify your running fuel pressure of 35-40 PSI.

I have the same problem with you jay45. It’s been a long time that I was looking for an answer with that question. I’ve browse the net and read some automotive site like autopartswarehouse but I never found the answer of my problem. It’s a good thing that you open up that situation. Hope that we can solve our problem in this forum. :)

Thanks for your response.I changed the fuel filter yesterday and I replaced the mass air flow and plug wires.I drove it again last night after it had cooled down and found that it was much smoother in running however it still failed to run over 3000 rpm and further depressing the throttle just made it bog sounds like the old 4 barrel carbs when opened up except your not going anywhere fast. After it warmed up it began to idle worse and it also began its surging/missing fealing.I have just about decided it is either the fuel pressure regulator or the fuel pump.I read on another site that it is possible to have a bad fuel pump and it will start up but not give the fuel delivery that the engine needs on a load.I am just not sure it will cause the missing feal that i get.I did not replace the plugs because they were changed not long ago but i did look at them and they looked ok.I just want to be sure before i go and get a 228.00 fuel pump because that is very exspensive. I will let you know if i find out its a fuel pump, but if anybody knows of any other problems it could be let me know.someone told me it could be the EGR but I have had an EGR failure on another car and it just dident want to idle it ran fine going down the road PLEASE HELP or at least let me know if I'm on the right track here thank you in advance.JAY

ok I just ordered a new fuelpump that will be here tomorrow at 228.00 plus tax. and I went by the insurance place and upped my coverage to "full" coverage just in case the fuel pump doesent work and the truck decides to burn. While I was at the auto store ordering this pump another guy was there to get a pump for a Ford Taurus and he told me that his was doing the same thing. The auto parts person said they were selling lots of pumps lately and that the mechanics have told him it was due to the ethynol they were mixing with the gas here in Texas,I dont know how true that is.Anyway I will have the pump in the morning and I will let those of you that want to know tomorrow if it worked or the fire department had to come.

You can always pick up a inexpesive fuel pressure test gauge and check the pressure, as well as volume 'prior' to spending the money for a new pump.. When you say it won't climb higher than 3K,, is that 'in place' just bringing the RPM's up? or does it have to be under a load/driving condition.. Will it rev past 3K smoothly if stationary? Cat problems can make for a dead throttle as well, but generally won't make for a rough idle unless very restricted, most times with a CEL.. If you have access to a fuel pressure test gauge, install it in the fuel rail and monitor the fuel pressure drop under the load conditions where the stumb/stall occurs.. You could have more than one issue causing your poor drivabilty, or base engine problems, and you may need to eliminate them as possible causes although a good fuel pressure/volume would be a good start point.. There are alot of helpful folks here, most work'n jobs and home lives.. I personally lost my best friend last week of 15 years, my 15 year old Labrador retriever.. Best dog that ever walked the planet.............

thanks hayapower for the reply!! Well now that you mention the idle reving I have never tried it before this but in the driveway in park if you rev the engine it will not go past 3000 rpms its like it has a governer or something because it will rev and cut out but rev again and it just keeps going like that you know like a rev limiter.in drive going down the road it will try to climb past 3000 rpms its just like there isent enough fuel to get it to go,it will eventually climb higher but not very fast.if I barely give it any throttle it will do ok but once it gets into overdrive at about 40-45mph and its good and warm (been running for about 5min.or so) it will begin to stumble as if it were missing however I put new plug wires on her yesterday and the plugs are almost new and they look good.I put my hand over the exhaust yesterday and it was so hot it nearly burned my hand. Its weird there is no check engine light comming on I thought one would surely come on and I could scan it and this would be easy but it has nothing.I thought about the fuel pressure gage but auto zone charges 36.00for it and I could only check it at an idle.on another site I was told it its common for a fuel pump to have a pump failure and still be able to drive the car that the the pump cannot keep up under a load and i just couldent see how i could check it going down the road the hoses are not long enough to stick on the out side were i could see the gauge.
