I am trying to recharge the freon on my son''s 1993 Taurus.  I cannot connect the hose to the low pressure switch as it does not want to fit.  Are the Ford low pressure hoses a different connection than other vehicles?  I am trying to connect to the aluminum tube that is at the front passenger side of the engine compartment.  Am I confusing this for the low pressure hose when it is somewhere else?

The low pressure port is located next to the firewall on the line coming off the accumulator.  Here is a picture of a system similar to yours.  he port is in the bubble to the top right of picture.

I tried to connect to that port also and the connector still did not want to fit.  I will go and play with it some more and see if I can get it.

Thank you for your response.

What kind of kit are you trying to use?  Is it R134A?  If so, I think your car has the R-12 freon and the connectors will not fit.  If yours has threads on the outside of the port, you need R-12 freon, not the 134A kit.

That would explain it.  I guess I should have researched it better.  I am using the same R-134 kit that I use on a 93 Dodge and  assumed the Ford would be R-134 also.  I guess I will have to kick out the big bucks for the R-12.  Do you know if R12a will work in the Taurus?

1994 was when R-134a was phased in 100%.  Your 1993 has R-12 in it.  You will need to have it serviced at a liscenced A/C shop.  You can have it convered to R-134a after repairing the system.  However, I personally would stay with the R-12 if the vehicle is worth keeping for several years.  A system converted to R-134a just isn''t as efficent as R-12.  You would need to evacuate the system, flush oil the system to remove the old mineral oil, replace all rubber hoses.  R-134a gas has a smaller particulate that will allow it to seep thru the rubber lines used on the R-12 system.  And the hoses will be saturated will old oil, thus contaminating the PAG oil and causing a future system failure.
