Hi all,

I have a 93 Taurus, 3.0l auto, GL that needs a new battery.

At the moment the battery is a group 65, but searches and parts places come up with either 65 or 58, so I am wondering what folks are using, and if a 58 is really enough for my Taurus.

I live in SLC, UT, so CCA are not overly important, IT gets cold, but its not Alaska or anything. The 58 is rated at 620 CA.

Is that enough battery to do the job. The present Die Hard is 1000 CCA which is ridiculous.

Money is tight, and the 58 is almost $20 less than the 65, so I would do well to spend the money elsewhere.

Anyone using a group 58, or have and experience/opinion as to whether that is enough battery?

Sure appreciate any thoughts or comments.

John

Group 58 is pretty much standard in Ford vehicles unless the vehicle is basically POWER everything, then they normally get a group 65 battery.  If the engine is maintained and receives periodic tune-ups (plugs, wires, air filter, fuel filter, injector cleaner, oil changes and such), then the group 58 should be just fine for your model.  The issue with most higher amp capacity batteries is that to increase the amp outpur, more plates are installed in the case, thus leaving less room fo relectrolyte.  This requires one to maintain a battery more often as the electrolyte evaporates.  Price a battery at your local Ford dealer, then tend to price the same or a hair less.  I just installed one in my Son''s 2000 Taurus SES (basically POWER everything).  The original battery was a group 58.  Was $15 less then an AUTOZONE Duralast and comes with a 7 year warranty.
