im looking at a 2004 and up ford f-150 4x4. now what i need to know is what kind of rear ends they have and which ones have the skid plates in them when the box says  4x4, fx4, 4x4 off road or what ever. what "4x4" has what option

Skid plates are standard on the FX4 and optional on all 4WD models. That being said, my 96 does not have skid plate expect for a small shield for the converters, and I do not worry about it off-road. Unless you are doing some serios stuff, arounds rock etc, I wouldnt worry about it.

FX4s have 3.55 posi or 3.73 posi rearends standard and its optional on other 4WD models. T-Loc rearends make a nice difference
