davej -> RE: 5.4 liter, spark plug blow out (11/19/2005 8:51:34 AM)

Well, I have an intersting update from my blown plug adventure: I just had to go back to the shop as my #3 was mis-firing. They pulled the plug and lo and behold: The insert came out with the plug!!!! Now, I would imagine that these SHOULD stay put even if someone were to do a spark plug chance, huh? It was also interesting to find that the bottom of the plug was melted away. They are now talking about a head replacement. After doing a little bit of research, I found that you are not supposed to use a stainless steel insert in the aluminum heads on the Ford 5.4L motors. Anyone want to guess what my insert is? Apparently, the head expands and contracts at a differing rate than the insert, thus loosening up, and not allowing the plug to stay seated and dissipate the heat buildup or function properly. Now I am faced with having the truck, my main driver and how I make money, down for who knows how long. I am planning on pressing them into paying for the repair as they were the ones that used the incorrect insert to begin with. Anyone else have this happen? By the way, this was a Ford dealer too.
